Trainin' in a Winter Wonderland

Hack of:
Pokemon Gold Version

Story:
This is much more than a simple graphics hack to add snow. This game takes place the same year as GSC, just later in the year. It assumes that the events of GSC (the radio tower take over, the sick Pokémon at the lighthouse, all that stuff) took place that summer, so the major events will be different and more holiday themed. Since this is part of what I'm calling the "Johto Legacy", I will also include a few references to things that happened in "Pokémon Secrets and Rumours" and things that will happen in "Pokémon Spirits and Legends".

What's New:

- Physical/Special split, like the newer games have
- Ability to play as a Boy or a Girl player, chosen in the intro
- Kris as the player's friendly rival
- The player you didn't choose as an extra rival
- Major events changed to new and holiday themed ones
- Updated tilesets to give it a snowy winter feel, with Fire Red looks
- Maps updated to their designs from Heart Gold
- New Pokémon added (from newer gens, NO Fakemon)
- A completely new move, "Flame Ball" used to melt ice blocks
- Rock Climb added to certain areas
- Draco Meteor added (only available in the Dragon's Den shrine in a gift Pokémon)
- Zigzagoon and Linoone have the "Pickup" ability
- New items (Key Items, Regular Items, etc.)
- Ice sliding on frozen lakes outside, not just in Ice Path
- New locations, including: South Isle, Battle Tower, Ecruteak Shinto Shrine, and more
- Locations from Heart Gold and Crystal added: Dragon's Den Shrine, Johto Safari Zone, and more
- Restored Kanto locations, including: Viridian Forest, Pewter Museum, and more
- Some wild Pokémon location changes, some are the same
- Trainers sprites and rosters updated
- All Gym Leaders have additional Pokémon, and all of Kanto's gyms are higher levels
- Lots of events have been redone, removed, added, etc.
- Some trainer classes have been changed
- There have been changes to the Elite Four
- Viridian Gym has a different leader
- New Game Corner prizes (Johto and Kanto)
- Additional Prize Exchanges added at the Battle Tower
- Practice Battle Machines added for the Battle Tower. (They are like the ones in the old Sterling Silver, but improved)
- Something special involving the Global Terminal in Goldenrod City
- More

It's actually been awhile since I've seen the progress on this hack. It's really looking good Mateo and I can't wait to see what's in store for this year's release. I've always loved the fact it feels like an addition to Gold/Silver's storyline, along with Spirits and Legends.

I have to say, this is a terrific hack. I've been playing casually for the past couple of months now and you've done a great job.

I haven't looked much into the future update, but are you planning on adding any new Pokémon? I would love to have more to catch!

Luna
9th July 2013, 06:08 AM
As for new Pokemon, I've replaced Sentret and Furret with Zigzagoon and Linoone (and with the help of Miksy91, I added a cool new secret to go with them, but you'll have to play to find out ;) haha.) I've also added 3 fakemon that were created, designed, and sprited by amvz08. I don't know how people feel about Fakemon around here, but I personally think that they are very well done and they won't hurt the feel any. These new fakemon fill the slots that were originally used by Mudkip's family in the last update. It didn't seem right to include only 1 line of Hoenn starters, and they didn't fit especially well anyway.

Mostly this new update is about events and gameplay though. Some of the maps have been tweaked a little, trainers have been changed around more, and Kanto isn't as easy as it was before. Also a lot of events have been redone that were still too similar to Gold. I know the start of the game was almost identical with the whole "Meet Oak at Mr. Pokémon's house, fight the rival in Cherrygrove" thing going on. Plus the lighthouse event was still the same and a lot of other things that should have been different were... not different. So this should help with continuity as well as giving new things to enjoy throughout the game.

EDIT: I did keep the Red Gyarados event in though, and I now have NPCs lampshading this. One in particular comes to mind who says something like "People are all going nuts about a Red Gyarados. I've seen like a dozen of 'em living here by the lake like this."

Also, Pia Carrot, there are a few more continuity hints at Spirits and Legends as well, including the player from that game's house in Cherrygrove and an NPC based on an anime character that I know we both like ;)

Say, if I'm Jewish, will I be able to play this hack without going to hell?

Absolutely. There is even a Jewish NPC in the game who talks about how much fun Hannukah is.

9th July 2013, 04:25 PM
Awesome, Matt. I'm all for fakemon, and I wouldn't mind having more than just 3!

But my dilemma is if, after you release the next version, I should start a new save or continue from my last one...

Luna
9th July 2013, 05:03 PM
@Esmas (http://romhackersonline.com/member.php?u=185) - You'll want to start a new save, this one won't be fully compatible with the 2012 version. What with the added Boy/Girl option and a lot of events being changed, you might run into errors (or at the very least, end up not getting to see events because they would be marked as already having passed).
@Rocka (http://romhackersonline.com/member.php?u=29) and Pirate Ninja - Thanks guys! Hope you all enjoy it (I'm sure you will though). Assuming nothing weird comes up, hoping to have this patch ready by the end of the month. But I'll keep everyone updated on things.

An incense burner. Unlike the ones in houses, you can actually use these.

Shhwonk
21st July 2013, 10:05 PM
Those screenshots make me excited. And I get to play as a girl! *_*

Does that incense burner attract Pokémon, by chance? Like in Colosseum?

Luna
21st July 2013, 10:10 PM
Yep, it attracts Pokémon. I don't know how it compares to Colosseum since I never had that one, but I would say it is somewhere between a Honey Tree and a Headbutt Tree. It requires an Incense item to use it (which will be used up of course, but you can buy them for pretty cheap) and it has a chance to battle one of a handful of different Pokemon that you can't otherwise find in that area. (It also has a chance to not attract anything, but it usually does). For example, using an Incense burner you can actually find Eevee in the wild in one area, but you can't find him just in the grass there.

Shhwonk
21st July 2013, 10:41 PM
My bad. It was in XD, places called PokéSpots where you could leave snacks and return to find wild Pokémon.

Anyways, neat idea. So stoked to play it.

Luna
23rd July 2013, 02:49 AM
Ah, I never had XD either. I didn't have a Gamecube :p Might aught to try it out now that I have an emulator (and a Wii). But either way, glad you like it :p

Also, I took the time today to update a tileset that I always felt was lacking, even though it isn't all that important you still see it used all over.

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/6726/6ae.PNG

I think it looks a lot better than the old ones:

I think it looks tons better and much more realistic.
Great work, and I'm sure I'll be expecting more updates like this in the near future. ;)

EDIT: One thing I noticed are the trees' placement. Is that intentionally done to block access to the back of the desks?

Thanks man! I like it a lot better too, and I'm sure there will be other tweaks and things here and there too :p

Also, yep intentionally done that way. I based it on the design from Fire Red.

Luna

Just a little bump, I disabled the checks so that traded Pokémon will always listen to you. I know it served a purpose on the real games, but since its a mess to trade in GBC hacks (and in here, you have to wait until the Global Terminal on South Isle to even be able to anyway) all the badge checks end up doing is making it difficult for you to use the Pikachu you get in Violet City.

Also, I've noticed a few more things that need to be overhauled so it might end up taking a little longer to release than I originally thought. I'll keep the thread updated though.

Luna
3rd August 2013, 03:21 AM
Thanks man, glad we agree on that haha.

Also, another thing: I already announced this on Facebook, but I've decided to announce what that "Secret" with Zigzagoon and Linoone was that I've been hinting at for months.

Miksy91 and I gave them their Pickup ability.

I was originally keeping it a secret, since nobody else had added abilities to Gen II before (and since we weren't adding the in-battle ones, I didn't want to open that can of worms) but now that I see RED is adding abilities to his Emerald remake (and adding a lot more of them!) I figured I might as well go ahead and announce what mine was. Didn't want people to think that I had ripped it off from him, because he's cool and I would never rip him off.

But yeah, long story short: Zigzagoon and Linoone have their Pickup ability in Pokémon Christmas, but no other abilities were added or planned. Its purely a raccoon thing ;P

I dunno if it works on GBC, but if it does work, you could move the pokemon table to another location, repoint some ugly things and you could add pokemon without replacing. I like how hack looks since winter is my favourite season :D

Luna
25th August 2013, 09:51 PM
@Gal (http://romhackersonline.com/member.php?u=2981) - sorry I missed your reply here. I'm afraid itd be a bit more complicated than that in Gen II, since without rewriting everything that deals with a Pokemon there would only been room for 255 Pokemon max, because it only uses 1 byte to keep up with them.

Another thing that I thought I had mentioned here, but apparently I only mentioned it on PokéCommunity and Facebook: After getting several people's opinions, I've decided to wait until Christmas to release the new version. But it won't just be a pointless delay, I'll also be continuing to update maps and tilesets like I had started.

Also, I don't have them inserted yet (because I'm still working on scripts) but here are some of the building designs that will be happening in the New Bark/Cherrygrove area (and also Pallet Town/Viridian. I'll be going with the Heart Gold idea of using the same types of trees in both regions, and several types of buildings and things).

http://imageshack.us/a/img824/482/6ulu.png
Here you can see the small houses, player's house, Pokecenter/Mart design, Elm's Lab, and the North/South Route Gate design.

http://imageshack.us/a/img29/4091/m14s.png
This has some of them used again, along with trees and grass. I'm thinking that to make this look more snowy, I'll make most of the grass background white instead of normal green, but make it look like the tufts of grass are sticking out of the snow. I'll post more screenshots once I have them in the game and have them in colour.

Also, I had originally been working on these graphics for a future project, so I'll have to modify them to be snowier. But you can still get the idea.

Also, do you guys think I should go with a snowy version of these Ruby devamped trees I have here, or use the original snowy trees I have in the current version?

With South Isle, I thought I posted a while back that I had added some new areas to it (A rocky beach area North of the town that you get to through a route gate, a forest, and another beach.) I also posted some screenshots and mentioned that there is a Team Rocket event going on down there now. The Team Rocket part works fine, but I did find a couple of bugs down there that I need to fix (most notably a guy in town who sells you some rare stuff based on the day of the week. The complicated part works fine, it just has some careless errors I need to fix). I've also tried to make the main "town" part of South Isle feel more like a town. There are more NPCs around doing things, and there is a large building representing a hotel or condo on the Island since it is supposed to be a tourist spot.

This update will also move the Global Terminal from South Isle back to Goldenrod. It was always kind of awkward where it was, since you had to fly to South Isle and then go through that cave any time you wanted to get to it. So it will be back in Goldenrod where it was in Crystal and Heart Gold. Goldenrod will still have its normal Pokemon Center as well, and the Global Terminal will be mapped as a cross between the Global Terminal in Heart Gold and the PokeCom Center in Crystal. I'll post some screenshots once I get to the re-mapping parts though (ie- once I get the new tilesets done and set up).

Flameball is a TM and a lot of Pokemon can learn it. It replaced Rock Smash and is needed to progress to Ecruteak so it can be learned by a lot of Pokemon. Any Fire-Type can learn it, and you can find both Growlithe and Vulpix by the time you get it, so there should be no trouble progressing if you didn't choose Cyndaquil. It can also be learned by some non-fire Pokemon like Gyarados, Dratini's line, Nido families, Linoone, etc. I haven't gotten around to doing the other moves though, but I will post more about them when I do. Thanks for reminding me though, because I had actually forgot to write them down in my notes.

Luna

1) There have always been ice blocks that you melt by using FlameBall outside of battle. They are just the size of normal rocks though, none that are huge (by that I'm assuming you mean Big Snorlax size). FlameBall replaced RockSmash.

2)Might be cool, I could look into that.

3)Mt.Silver is currently not a place you can go in Pokemon Christmas. You unlock Cerulean Cave instead. (Also the maps and flight data for Mt. Silver were used to make South Isle :p)

4) You didn't list a #4

5)Reference to Santa Claus will happen. Might add a yeti, especially if I end up adding Obamasnow.

6) That might happen. I'm also making stantler's shiny form have a Red nose like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". Right now I tried to make Teddiursa and Ursaring be more rare and mainly found in caves since they look like normal bears and normal bears hibernate.

Alright, I've been working on this a bit more lately (I took a break from it for a bit to help Freako finish Bronze). I've restored the upstairs in the Pokémon Centers that I had removed in the last version. I also made it so that you find the Name Rater in the upstairs as well, so that you don't have to wait until you get to Goldenrod (or backtrack to Goldenrod) if you decide to change a Pokémon's name. I've also done some work on other things, such as adding trainers to Ice Path and stuff. Right now I'm working on completely redoing the events in Mahogany Town, since I decided that they were too similar to original Gold.

I have a couple of things I would like you guys' opinion on too:
1. The Time Capsule (allowing trade with RBY). Should this be part of the Global Terminal in Goldenrod, or in the gate to the "Pal Park" in Fuchsia City? I'm kinda leaning toward the Pal Park myself.
2. The Move Deleter. Should he stay in Blackthorn City, or should I put him in the upstairs of Pokémon Centers along with the Name Rater?

I think the move deleter should be in the Pokécenters. It would make things far simpler if you had them everywhere rather than in just one area. As for the time capsule, I like the idea of it being near the "pal park" area :)

That was my thought. I know that not everyone can emulate a link cable, but for those who can, it felt like it would be better to have that functionality in the Pal Park area since it would be a lot simpler than trying to make a "real" Pal Park. (It currently has the same map as the Pal Park, but it is just stocked with Pokémon that were in Red's Safari Zone and you battle them normally).

Also, the Move Deleter being everywhere seems handier to me as well. Assuming nobody else comes up with a compelling reason to do otherwise, I think this is the setup I'll be going with.

AriNikoBradshaw - It would be neat, and I know that Miksy91 came up with a way to do it in Dark Energy. I know Crystal had them too. I think Crystal actually used some unused TM learning flags to mark them, because it only had a few. Not sure how I would go about it if I added them or how many I would add. They aren't very high on my list of things to do, but if I get the other stuff like storyline changes and graphic updates done in time they would be worth looking into ;)
Rocka - Thanks bro! Sorry I overlooked your comment at first or I would have said something earlier.

Just wanted to bump this thread a little. I haven't posted much, but I've been working on the the tileset updates lately. Here are some black-and-white previews of a couple of things.

http://imageshack.us/a/img194/2500/466z.png http://imageshack.us/a/img594/9573/f8oh.png
The Pokemon Center design. Very similar to what it was in the last update, since I'd already messed with that tileset, but nicer. Credit for the heal machine goes to RED, all other devamps/customs are by me.

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/6701/9qit.png
The upstairs for Route Gates. I'm planning to add these back in for the ones that had them in Gen I and III if I have time/maps. Not super important, but for continuity's sake it feels weird to have an entire floor of a building disappear between generations. All devamps/customs by me. A few tiles taken from Red.

http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/5566/cxzv.png
Cycling Road concept. Still working on this a bit. All devamps by me.

http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/8104/zdfl.png
The snowy Pokemon Center design. And a snowy house. Devamps/customs by me.

I have more done too, but I don't want to spoil all of it before release. I'll show off more later, and I'll have actual in-game shots closer to release instead of these black-and-white previews while I'm still finalizing designs.

I don't know why, but the PokeBox (PC Thingy) in the Pokemon Center bugs me. It looks almost too much like the FR and LG ones and clashes with the style of say the stairs. I really don't think it's that big of deal but it bugs me :p

I see what you mean about it looking more advanced than the stairs. I like the PC though, so instead I'll see if I can make the stairs look better ;)

Thanks for the feedback!

Let's see. I still have to insert most of the new tilesets I've been working on and remap things. That sounds like a lot, but I tend to enjoy map and tileset work more than I enjoy scripting, and so it tends to go a lot faster.

Today I'm working on some of the scripting that I keep putting off doing. I've been working on completely re-doing Mahogany Town's events. It will no longer involve Team Rocket at all, and will be more Christmasy. To make up for it, there is now a Team Rocket event on South Isle that you have to do before you can battle Jasmine for the badge. Works a lot better than having Amphy get sick again for no reason :p

I'll have to play through again to make sure, but I think Mahogany Town's event is the last major storyline thing I need to do as far as scripting is concerned. I have some minor things to do here and there, like NPCs that currently say "Object Event" because I haven't made them do anything yet here and there, probably some actual bugs I'll want to fix before beta testing, and just random things I will probably want to tweak before release. But yeah, gonna try to knock out the design and scripting for the Mahogany Event so I can focus on the map updates I've been teasing.

Basically, I've been having trouble finalizing how I wanted the event to play out, so I couldn't start working on it yet. And I didn't want to start working on the mapping before that was done, because I didn't want to risk forgetting about it xD

Very well done Mateo, I haven't actually played much of Pokemon Christmas, mainly due to time constraints and due to wanting to wait for the finished product, I have come to enjoy seeing updates for Pokemon Christmas on PC, I hope to see even more here, regardless, very well done game!

Thanks man, glad you enjoy what you've seen so far.

And speaking of updates, here is a little mock-up map made from a tileset I'm working on right now.

http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/5221/v6k5.png

As you can see, its the inside of the Ruins of Alph chambers. I've also drawn the tiles in such a way that you can walk behind the top parts of those walls (like I described in my "[Gen II] Walk Behind Things" tutorial that should be posted here.)

And here's another tileset teaser for you guys:

http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/705/u1zz.png

This would be used for the Power Plant, Dept. Store Basement, a couple of gyms, that kind of thing. It doesn't show off everything the tileset can do though but like I say, its a teaser ;)

I like it, but I'm not sure about the ground tiles. Maybe I just need to see them in color before I can really judge. Are the colors identical to http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/b/be/Altering_Cave_FRLG.png?

That is the tileset I devamped it from, so thats the colour scheme I had in mind. It won't look exactly like that though, it would use the night-time pallets like caves did in Gen II. I'm a little unsure about the dirt tiles myself actually so I may end up changing it.

EDIT: Also, here is another thing from the Cave tileset, for the cliff gate in Cianwood City.

From the outside, it was always a generic house like the ones in Violet City or Ecruteak in Gen II. But yes, inside it will look fancy like it always did. And since its still a work in progress, I may see if I can make it look a bit fancier on the outside too.

EDIT: For reference, this was the shrine in Crystal. (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:Dragons_Den_C.png)

EDIT2: As an experiment, I came up with this. Haven't tried to fit it into the tileset yet, but its another work in progress. Devamped from Emerald mostly.

MetalKnick

Either of them look fine, really. The one you had fits better, but it doesn't look like a shrine, whereas the new one looks like a shrine but is kinda squished. It's a really tough choice.

I'm thinking that I'll use a version of that design (but different) to make the places like Sprout Tower and Tin Tower, but even doing that it will still be different from a boring house. And since the towers and things are special, it will still give the feeling that "Hey, this is something important" not "Oh look, a house in a cave..."

So they would be Snowboy, Snowdude, and Snowman or something xD I didn't think they were starters though, I was thinking we had them in Sterling Silver on Route 32 or somewhere else that didn't make any sense. I think they were just using Totodile's pallet and so the filenames said totodile and stuff.

Huh, yeah. I read over the OP again a while back and noticed the new Pokemon line. What will they actually look like? Also, what was the motive behind adding custom Pokemon?

Yeah, I should go ahead and post their sprites here. Basically the way it happened was this:

1) I was talking about adding Pokemon from new generations and hadn't finalized the list yet.
2) Amvz asked "If I make some fakemon would you include them?"
3) I said "I'll have to see what they look like and what you had in mind for them first, Fakemon can be really hit or miss."
4) He designed some Fakemon, I liked them, so I decided to include them. They took the slots that the 2012 version had filled with Mudkip, Marshtomp, and Swampert. I figured there was no sense in having only 1 family of Hoenn starters and so I was looking to replace them with Ice types anyway. I was leaning toward replacing them with Spheal, Sealeo, and Walrein at first, but I figured that with Seel and Dugong already in the lineup they would be a bit redundant.

Anyway, here are the Fakemon that are included (and everything you wanted to know about them)

Also, since its December and stuff, have the first in-game screenshot of the new graphic update.

http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/7206/izk3.png

EDIT: Side note, while I enjoy mapping and designing tiles, I still wasn't thinking about how tedious it would be to repoint and redesign all of these tilesets :p To save space in the rom (and since I would be havign to redesign them all anyway) I deleted all of the old tileset data so I could insert all of my new ones. Right now my current setup has more variety than Gold, but uses fewer tilesets than Gold did (Only around 23 instead of 28) because I was able to combine some of them especially indoor tilesets like houses and things.

So as a bit of a progress report:

Old data removed: 100%
Tileset graphics inserted: 100%
Pallet assignments moved to new bank and individually repointed: 100%
Pallet assignments set up on tilesets: 55%
Block/Collision Data repointed: 43%
Block/Collision Data set up: 5% xD

I know that last part means I have a lot left to do. I'm hoping I haven't bitten off more than I can chew trying to get this ready by Christmas, but I will do my best (and if its not done and tested in time, I won't make a rushed buggy release, I'll just wait until its done, but I'll try to do it as soon as I can since I know people are excited to play this.)

Cherrygrove City at night.

http://imageshack.us/a/img845/6192/yjua.png
Cherrygrove City at night.

That's all the screenshots for right now. It's kinda slow going because its so tedious remaking all the tilesets from scratch and then remapping things.

progress report:

Old data removed: 100%
Tileset graphics inserted: 100%
Pallet assignments moved to new bank and individually repointed: 100%
Pallet assignments set up on tilesets: 100%
Block/Collision Data repointed: 100%
Block/Collision Data set up: ??%

I still have a ton of mapping to do, although the indoor maps are quick going. There are a ton of houses, but they all point to the same map data. Same goes for Marts, Centers, Route Gates, and that sort of thing... so once I remap one Mart, I've remapped all of them. So the bulk of the mapping is the outdoor areas, caves, and the random indoor areas like the Pokemon League Gate and Lobby, the labs, and stuff. Which is still a lot. But I'm trying to set up my tilesets so that some of the basic stuff is in the same place so I can make my mapping life easier. I'm afraid I may have bitten off more than I can chew (so to speak) and really don't know if I can have this ready for Christmas or not. But if not, I'll just keep working on it and get it released when it's ready. After all, I do always say "this isn't just a holiday gimmick".

anyway, looks pretty good; though Im not so sure about the Cherrygrove shore looking like that. I cant quite imagine how a snow-covered beach looks like though so I cant suggest anything...

Luna
12th December 2013, 05:14 PM
Above the PC is a Pikachu Poster. It was one of the possible decorations in Gold, although originally it would be over by the stairs and (if I remember) had to be unlocked randomly using Mystery Gift which you can't do in an emulator since last time I checked none of them emulate the IR port on the GBC.

As for the shore, I really don't know what a snowy beach would look like either so I just made it look like a normal beach like people would expect. But I figure even if it did snow, waves would still come up on the sand and there would be sandy/shallow water near the edge whether or not there was snow on the rest of it or not because of the way beaches sorta slope into the water.

Alice

Luna

Glad to hear you're a fan. As far as the building designs, and the graphics in general, I've been trying to go for a "Gen II and a half" feel, and I think I've pulled it off pretty well so far.

I've been trying to keep the map designs somewhere between Crystal and Heart Gold, since those show the way Gamefreak wanted to improve Johto, but of course I've added my own things as well. (South Isle, for instance, is completely new. But since its an island, it doesn't hurt anything for it to suddenly be accessible now when it wasn't in Gold.)

Also, apparently I never released this screenshot except on Facebook, so I'll go ahead and add it now.

http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/8445/odjs.png

Its the Pewter Museum of Science. Very similar to its design in Fire Red, except I changed the entrance a bit. And as you can see, I went the Heart Gold route and used the same tree and grass designs in Johto and Kanto. The Kanto trees looked strange to keep in with the other graphic updates, and I've never particularly liked the Kanto trees anyway.

But since Christmas was my original goal for this release, I'll try to get it ready as close to Christmas as I can. I might try to do that depending on how much of this I can get finished this week. I would probably use my snowy graphics but not have it take place in normal Johto or Kanto since that would be too similar to this hack and would be pushing the envelope when it comes to whether it qualifies or not I think. Wow the scans are very nice, but I dont like very much the purple color of the houses, but I love the Cycles road, Is beatiful <3
I have many questions related to the graphics,
Do you update the gym leaders sprites likes HG/SS?
Why you use the grass tile of R/S/E? I dislike these tile, instead I use the grass of FR/LG

Luna
16th December 2013, 04:29 PM
When you say grass tile, do you mean tall grass or normal grass? For normal grass I am using Fire Red. I think the tall grass was from RSE though. As for why, I already had it devamped and I didn't really have a preference between the two styles of tall grass in terms of look so I went with the one I already had.

The purple color might change, it would be simple enough. It just uses the roof pallet, and so I was thinking I would change it to match the color those houses were in Fire Red. I have to go in and fix Celadon's color too, so I may as well change Fuchsia while I'm in there.

And yeah, most of the trainer sprites have been updated to either be from newer generations or made to fit in with the winter climate.

Not sure if Mateo wants / has already added some of those into this hack, but personally, I don't think gen IV or V backsprites should be used. They differ from the style so that instead of only the back of the pokemon being shown (from close-by), you'll see the pokemon from further back and it as whole.

That wouldn't be a major issue though, but something that would catch people's attention at least.

I'm pretty sure its something you'll all enjoy. And so far its looking like I can make it work but still not going to announce what it is until I'm sure.

Also, while I'm here, I went ahead and updated most of the screenshots in the first post. They were really outdated. (Some are still old, but most of them are current now). I don't think it shows off too much that I haven't shown already in the last few pages but there might be. So feel free to take a look at that if you want, and if nothing else it gives people who are viewing the thread for the first time a chance to see more that it will actually look like.

EDIT: I need to update that title image too.

How dependent is this game on G/S/C's day & night system? How much would you be missing out on without it?

I'm asking because I would really like to play this, but since I never actually play hacks on PC and prefer to play it on something that has actual buttons, I would like to put this on my EZ Flash IV with the goomba emulator, but I know that I would be unable to use the day/night system due to not having an RTC.

I don't really have any time-based events, but there might be a few things with wild pokemon found in one time of day. There are still some things that happen once-a-day or on specific days of the week though.

-There is a shrine in Ecruteak where you can come in once a day and have the shrine maiden bless one of your Pokemon to increase its happiness.
-The "Day of the Week Siblings" from original Gen II are still around, since they were always part of Johto.
-I had planned to include an NPC that sold Pokemon Eggs, and the egg would vary based on the day of the week, but I'm planning to change this to not be as dependent on the day since that would get annoying even for people with the RTC.
-The Trainer House in Viridian was originally going to have a different trainer each day of the week. I've also been thinking I may change this as well, though.

Unless I have forgotten something, those should be the only major things that involve the day of the week.

EDIT: But I guess you could still do daily events. You'd start the game and it would say "The clock isn't set" and you could set it to whichever day you want.

Actually nevermind lol, I realized I could play this on my Wii, since the VBA-GX emulator on there uses the Wii's clock for RTC-enabled games. I'll give this a go.

I'll go ahead and post a little update in here: I've updated the town map design to look very nice. I'll probably still make a few more tweaks to it before release, but this is what I have right now:

http://i.snag.gy/arOJa.jpg

The new pallets and tiles used to make this (with the exception of 1 or 2 tiles) were donated by ~Gold!. (I know you said I don't have to credit you, but I like to give credit where credit is due :p ) So yeah, that's another thing I've done to overhaul the graphics. I don't think that's too much of a spoiler since there is a town map in the player's bedroom and usually the first thing anyone does is scope out the town map anyway to see what the region looks like (or at least I like to do that).

I know I had one person say "But Mateo! It's winter, shouldn't the town map be snowy?" but to that I say "Well, no not really. If you pull out a paper map or pull up Google Maps it doesn't suddenly get drawn in snowy colours just because it's winter." So it is only realistic to have the map stay in normal colours.

Hmm, yeah they do look a bit off and are my least favorite part of the maps. I'll try tweaking them to work with a different pallet first and see if that helps, and if not I'll come up with something different.

Yeah, I'll see if I can come up with a better way to do that. It does look kind of odd (and even more odd when you see it in-game where you don't have the Johto map right there handy to see at a glance that it connects to South Isle).

Decided to start back working on this today instead of continuing to get distracted with my side project. Getting close to knocking out the mapping finally. Then it will just be a matter of... remembering what all I have left to script and fixing that up. Then bug testing and all that of course.

Most of the scripting I have to do is minor, like generic NPCs and trainers, item balls, and that stuff. But I do still have a couple of more "involved" areas to script and all so not sure when I'll have this ready or anything. Just letting you all know this isn't dead (even if I have been ignoring the thread a bit and posting screenshots of that Gen III hack I started on the side).

Looking forward to the demo, because i like what i've seen so far.
Btw, will Saffron city's fighting dojo be like Gen 1/3, or Gen 2/4 ?

Here is a little explanation of how the dojo "works" in the Gens (you may already now it but i wrote it in case you had forgotten):
Gen 1/3: It's like a gym, except you get a pokemon instead of badge if you beat the karate master.
Gen 2/4: There is a lone NPC, the karate master is in Johto, no battles in the dojo. In Gen 4, gym leaders can be rebattled in the dojo (and the karate master is now a karate king, but that's not really important).

Currently the Dojo is like Gen II. I'm still debating on whether I would rather make it be more like Gen I/III or Gen IV though. Rematching Gym Leaders would be cool, so I've considered that way. But at the same time, there is also an unofficial gym in Johto that is modeled exactly after the Fighting Dojo from Gen I and III. So having the original Dojo behave this way too would be nice as well.

I was always hoping that one hack has that kind of town map, and you really made it! Just cant wait for the next version of chrismas hack!

Well, most of the new tiles and pallets were donated by ~G0LD! and I'm not sure how long it took her to make them. Then I added the green dots for locations and some extra tiles for where paths join together and fixed all the pallet assignments and played with the maps to get them right. Didn't take super long to get it in the rom though, I spent more time tweaking the layout until I was happy with it.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was: "it would be the best thing ever if all the Pokemon were wearing little santa hats".

Just food for thought.

Thanks for commenting, but I'm going to have to veto that idea. If this was just a holiday gimmick I might go with it, but since I've been trying to make this a serious hack that just happens to take place around Christmas, I think that would just be extremely out of place. Sorry mate.

I have an idea about the fighting dojo. What if you sorta did both ideas? Like, make it so at first it does like gen 1 and you fight some karatemen and get a fighting Pokemon (Maybe Hitmontop?) And then if you come back later after you do that, then you can do rematches with other trainers there like in gen 4. Not sure if that would be too much work or not, but it might be neat.

Luna
29th March 2014, 10:06 PM
Chamber - I definitely like your map, and it was the one ~G0LD! showed me when she offered to add the tiles. I've gone to Whack A Hack a few times, but I haven't gotten around to registering there yet or anything. I will eventually though! Also, glad you like the updates I've been making, and hopefully I will have it ready for you guys to play relatively soon.
CrystalMarina - That could be a fun idea. I was originally planning to have some rematches in the Trainer House in Viridian, but I keep changing my mind on how I want the trainer house to work anyway, so adding rematches in the Dojo would serve that same purpose and be more like Heart Gold. I'll keep that idea in mind.

==================

Also, while I'm here, I wanted to apologize for my seeming lack of hacking activity lately. I recently got a job and so I've had a lot less free time to work on the hack or post updates. So the hack certainly isn't dead or anything, I've just been a lot more busy lately.

Bumping my thread a little to say I've been working on this a bit tonight after sort of slacking the last few days.

Updates:

1. Updated the berries to have their current names, instead of the "PSNCUREBERRY" type names that people love to make fun of.

http://i.snag.gy/MW4xs.jpg

2. Rescripted a few things in New Bark Town, so that they aren't exactly the same as original Gold like they were in the last version. I mean sure, it's a starting town, so it is still similar. But things are a little different before you leave home. You might want to check the PC before you leave too.

3. Fixed a bug with the Coin Case that was present in original Gold. Simple fix, just put the proper ending byte on the Coin Case's text string.

4. Worked on generic scripting for NPCs, and fixed a bug that I found in a script (but since it is an event that wasn't in the last version, you guys never saw this bug :p )

5. Added the Physical/Special split. I know I mentioned this on PC, but I managed to forget to post that here. All moves will have their official designation, and the custom move Flame Ball will be a "Special" attack.

6. Fixed a problem that was keeping me from letting you battle whichever player you didn't choose in the intro. So now that that's fixed, I'll be including battles with either Coordinator Mei or PkMn Breeder Hiro (instead of just making them show up at times as an NPC that talks to you and does stuff).

Yep, I used the same graphics as the one in the Sevii Islands from FR/LG. I was pretty happy with how it came out :)

And nope, Snorlax is still here. He isn't in Vermillion City though (and you will be able to wake him up correctly. The old version had a bug that you had to be standing in a particular spot for it to work, but in this version you can talk to him from anywhere and it will wake him up so long as you are playing the pokeflute station).
Never thought about it before myself either, but after reading what you had put up about Snorlax here, you can make it function properly from any side by putting normal signposts events on top of it.

don't know if you just did that or is this new snorlax only approachable from the right but yeah...

Interesting screenshots though. No idea where the last two are from :)

No the problem before came from the stupid checks gamefreak had in the specoal command. In order for it to return true, you had to be playing the pokeflute song AND be standing on hardcoded x and y values. I replaced that by just checking for the pokeflute station to be playing and ignoring the x and y values since you kinda have to be standing next to him in order to talj to him. No signpost events are necessary.

Huh... kinda strange of them to implement it that way actually.
I just figured the snorlax is a normal people event and it's script is all that is executed when you talk to it, but it can be approached only from a few sides/positions and not all.

Yeah that was a weird way to do it on their part. It is a normal people event so you can talk to it from any direction, but by moving it to accomodate the map changes it would refuse to wake up because you weren't standing on the right place any more. Weird. But it has no such problems any more so all is good now :)

Bumping because it's about to hit page 2. I can't let that happen. And hoping for status update?

Luna

Well, let's see. A few things I've announced on PC but forgot to announce here:

- I finished a secret/surprise feature that I was planning.
- I'm working on adding a version of the "Trendy Phrase" from Gen III. It will be used for fun, but will also be able to unlock some things if all goes as planned. More on that later though.
- I made berry trees give you more than just 1 berry at the time.
- I added Rock Climb (that was a while back, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that here but just making sure). It will be a TM instead of an HM, but it will still require the Earth Badge to use it outside of battle, the same as it did in Heart Gold.
- I'm planning to include a clone of Mystery Gift that you can use single-player, since to my knowledge there are no GBC emulators that emulate the IR port on the top of the system, making the original Mystery Gift useless in a rom.

I'm also *fingers crossed* hoping for a "Christmas in July" release, but I make no promises on that since I don't know for sure how busy work will keep me. That is still what I'm aiming for though, so if it isn't ready by the end of July I will just get it out as soon as it is ready anyway instead of saying "Oh I missed July, guess I'll just wait until December". So yeah, hopefully some time in the next month or two.

Just bumping this to say that I should have some new updates soon, since I have the next 2 days off from work, so I'll have more free time to work on this.

In the meantime, here is a devamp I made tonight. I don't know if I will make a snowy version to use here specifically or if I will end up using it somewhere else.

http://i60.tinypic.com/2rcssaf.png

And no, I'm not planning to add the Hoenn Battle Frontier to this hack, because that would be silly. If I ended up using this it would be somewhere else, but yeah Hoenn's Battle Frontier is where the original building came from.

Just bumping this thread with a goofy video that shows off the Mart tileset, while also pointing out that not all of the NPCs are serious. So you might want to, you know, talk to them and see what they have to say. You might get a laugh from some of them (or at the very least, say "Hey! I know what he's talking about!").

A little update for you all. I decided that since I had some unused tilesets, and since NPCs claim that it is summer in South Isle while one tries to awkwardly explain away the snow, I decided to just make South Isle not snowy anymore. So while Kanto and Johto are snowy, South Isle is not. Here is a little video showing off the update. May contain a couple of very slight spoilers but not really. Everyone pretty much knows there is a Legend Festival and a Team Rocket event there, and this doesn't really show off either of those in any detail.

So I just realized that I've been slacking really hard on updating this thread. Glad you like it, and I'll try to get this thread up-to-date. Not sure when the release will be ready, but it should be ready by Christmas I would hope.

THAPELO
25th August 2014, 07:04 PM
will it going to be available in meboy

Luna
25th August 2014, 07:23 PM
THAPELO - No, I will not be releasing this as a meboy.jar file. Those contain the entire rom, and as such are against forum rules. If you want it as a meboy.jar file, I'm afraid you will have to patch the file like everyone else, and use MeBoy Builder to make the .jar file.

@ Everyone Else - This *should* be a list of all the other things that I've mentioned elsewhere and forgot to include in this thread.

- There will be (at least) 2 releases. The first release will contain Johto and the Elite Four, the second release (probably closer to actual Christmas) will be the full game and include both Johto and Kanto. While save files from the old 2012 version will not be compatible with the 2014 version, save files between the Johto release and the Full release will be fully compatible, so you will be able to pick up right where you left off when the Full version comes out. The reason for releasing it this way is because given the way I've been working on it, the Johto half of the game is a lot closer to completion than the Kanto half. This way you all can start playing the game earlier, and can give me feedback for the second half of the game. Seems reasonable to me, anyway.
- I have recently been considering changing the way Eevee evolves into Glaceon and Leafeon. In the 2012 version (and currently in the 2014 version) he evolves via the items "Ice Shard" and "Leaf Stone". However, I'm thinking I might change this to involve a Mossy Stone and Icy Stone on the overworld similar to Gen IV. More on this once I've tested it though.
- Snover, Obamasnow, and Rotom will be the 3 Pokémon to replace Mudkip, Marshtomp, and Swampert. Cubchoo and Beartic will likely replace Teddiursa and Ursaring, although I am still undecided on that. Rotom will be found in Kanto in a way that will be in keeping with the Christmas themes, as well as the backstory of the area where you'll find him.
- The Move Deleter and the Name Raters have been moved into the upstairs of every Pokémon Center. There will be various things in their former locations, such as Move Tutors or other things.
- The Shinto Shrine in Ecruteak City is home to a new way you can increase a Pokémon's happiness. So everyone wanting an Espeon or an Umbreon will now have another place to increase happiness in addition to haircuts, tea with Gary's sister, and the other usual ways.
- Mew is no longer a Game Corner prize the way he was in the 2012 version. He will instead be an event Pokémon like normal legendaries. He will be found in Johto, but since you need Rock Climb to reach him, he will not be available until the Full Version is released.
- All of the RBY fossil Pokémon will be available in-game. Omanyte and Kabuto can be obtained through NPC gifts as rewards, Aerodactyl is available by reviving Old Amber at the Pewter Museum.
- There will be several ways to get trade-evolution Pokémon. In addition to trading normally via the Pokémon Centers, they all have new methods of evolution added, and (unless something weird happens to make me change my mind) there will be an NPC who offers to trade-and-trade-back with you to enable evolving these Pokémon that way.

I think that about covers most of the updates I've discussed in the thread over at PokéCommunity, anyway. I'll try to be better about posting updates in more than just that thread in the future.

The old 2012 version has been, yeah. But it is really outdated at this point so I didn't add the download to this thread and I'm waiting until the 2014 release. If you reeeeally want to play the outdated 2012 version you can find the patch on PokeCommunity though.

Sorry, I keep slacking on updating this thread for some reason. Let's see, what all have I done since I updated here...

- The list of TMs should be final now. It ended up being mostly the same as Gold, with a few changes.
- TM08 teaches Flame Ball instead of Rock Smash. I was lazy and replaced Rock Smash with this new move that you use to melt Ice Blocks (this has been in since 2012 though).
- TM09 teaches Rock Climb instead of Psych Up. Despite it being a TM, you will still need the Earth Badge to be able to use it outside of battle.
- TM40 teaches Draco Meteor. It will be a rare TM obtained later in the game (only one TM available). It can be learned by Dratini, Dragonaire, Dragonite, Kingdra, Charizard, and Gyarados. Only Dratini's family will be able to learn the move as an Egg Move. (No breeding it onto Charmanders, Horseas, or heaven forbid, a Magikarp).
- Venusaur is now able to learn Sludge Bomb via TM.
- Feraligatr is now able to learn Crunch by level.
- Snover, Obamasnow, and Rotom are fully inserted now. I finished fixing their TM/HM data and Pokedex data.
- Fixed a bug in the Fly map that made your sprite look glitchy when flying as the girl. I finally realized that the problem was a check that I forgot to fix from RED's original gender select routine he sent me. (He originally stored gender in a different RAM address than I did, but I changed it because the one he used wasn't saved and caused you to revert to Male every time you saved and continued).
- Changed a text string in Falkner's Gym (Birdkeeper no longer says "Cool story, bro").
- Fixed all errors in Ruins of Alph, including: Collision data errors, broken encounter rate for wild Pokémon, and faulty movement data causing an NPC to walk on trees and walls when taking you to the lab to upgrade your Pokedex.
- Altered text on Route 33, so the Hiker can't be misconstrued as calling you one gender or the other.
- Altered some text in Azalea Town.
- Replaced a Rocket Grunt in Delibird Cave with a Rocket Admin, since it was odd for a Grunt to be in charge of anything.
- A bunch of move descriptions were accidentally broken, but I fixed them all and made sure the new moves have accurate descriptions.
- Changed more NPC text in and around Azalea Town.
- Fixed it so Kris uses the "Beauty" theme instead of the more sinister-sounding "Rival" theme before battles.
- Looked into removing the "Giovanni, can you hear us? We did it!" radio broadcast without screwng up the rest of the "Rockets took over the Battle Tower" event, but haven't gotten it all checked out yet. I'll come back to this later.
- Fixed a flight location or two that was off.
- Removed the guy who gave Headbutt from Ilex, made you receive it in Goldenrod instead (But you can get it waaaay earlier than Goldenrod if you catch a Zigzagoon because he learns it naturally).
- Considered (but haven't finalized) some revisions to the items you can find with PICKUP.
- Put BRIGHTPOWDER as an item you can find in Ilex Forest.
- Tweaked a few trainers' teams.

I've also been modifying Chamber's code for "Generic Move Tutors" so that I can make specific ones. They will work the same way, but instead of a tutor that can teach the move to basically every Pokemon, these will only be able to teach it to specific Pokemon instead. Need to finish testing the code to make sure everything works right.

And here is the list of items you can find with PICKUP currently, but I'm planning to change it a bit. I'm planning to add Heart Scale to the list in a rare position, remove Ice Shard, and stuff like that. More on that later though. Anyway, here is the list:

Thanks Gamer2020 and Fennekin !

In an effort to try and stay on top of updating this thread too, let's see... I haven't done as much the last couple of days (I got distracted, tried to start working on Pokémon Spirits and Legends, and then was like "No! Stop! Work on Christmas!") But anyway...

- Added some brand-new trainers to Ilex Forest.
- Added a Move Tutor in Ilex Forest, who teaches Megahorn to Pokémon that can learn it by level-up in the newer gens. This costs 1 Heart Scale per use.
- Added Heart Scale to the list of items that can be found by Zigzagoon with Pickup (but they are rare).
- Altered some NPC text in the Gate House between Ilex and Route 34
- Played around with trainers on Route 34 so they aren't exactly the same as Gold.
- Changed the prizes in Goldenrod's Game Corner (Mew is no longer included the way she was in 2012)
- Started working on the code for my single-player Mystery Gift clone (since to my knowledge, no emulator bothered to emulate the IR port on the GBC, making actual Mystery Gift useless).

That's my current progress report, I'll try to keep you guys posted as more comes up. Hoping I will have this release ready for the holidays. I doubt it will be the full game, but Johto + Elite Four should be ready by or before then. (And when the time comes, I'll make sure the Full Version is fully compatible with your save file from the Johto + Elite Four release).

I've been trying to make some progress this weekend to make up for slacking the last few days lol. Not done working on it for the night, but here is my current progress report since last time:

- Changed Game Corner prizes to no longer include Mew. They are now Eevee, Dratini, and Porygon.
- Made the girl in Goldenord Dept. Store emulate Mystery Gift.
- Replaced the original Name Rater with a guy who gives you the TM for Headbutt.
- Fixed a bug that had somehow shown up making the haircut brothers change the colours of the floor and stuff (weird, but fixed now anyway).
- Changed a few NPCs text in various places around town.
- Altered some NPC text in the Global Terminal and Dept. Store.
- Fixed Dept Store basement to use the right pallet.
- Fixed a bug with the sign for the Water Dojo (I accidentally used "jumptextfaceplayer" instead of "jumptext" on the sign, causing whichever NPC you last talked with to face you when you read the sign. lol).
- Altered some NPC text in the Water Dojo.
- Various minor NPC changes in National Park.
- Fixed bugged encounter rates for Burned Tower.
- Changed a trainer in Burned Tower that used to be a silly gimmicky Firebreather to be a Burglar who behaves normally.
- Fixed a warp in Ecruteak's Pokemon Center that took you outside when it was supposed to take you upstairs.

I think that's about it for this update, but I'll do more tonight and tomorrow as well and have more to post soon.

And here is a little preview video:

To keep with the updates, let's see. Haven't done a super lot so far today (I kinda slept the first half of the day because I was off work today, and then I got distracted planning for another future hack but not getting started on it.) Anyway, here is what I've been working on right now (and the other day, since I forgot to post here):

- Removed the very out-of-place battle with "Romhacker Mateo" in Burned Tower (because it was clearly just an edited version of the Rival battle from Gold).
- Added 2 new trainers in Burned Tower (a Channeler and another Burglar. Bringing the total to 1 Cueball, 2 Burglars, and a Channeler inside).
- Roaming legendaries are enabled when you first visit the tower.
- Fixed a few tile errors in the Pagodas and Shrine blocks (incorrect roof tile in a couple of blocks, not super noticeable but once I noticed it I had to fix it).
- Fixed a bug where Channelers still used the old woman sprite in Ecruteak Gym.
- Started working on changes to the "Help the man find his daughter" event at Burned Tower. In the 2012 version it was odd because once you rescue her she is nowhere to be found and stuff like that. Will make more sense and feel more natural once I get it all sorted.
- Removed Ice Shard as an item.
- Replaced Ice Shard with Dawn Stone.
- Fixed it so Snorunt evolves into Froslass with Dawn Stone instead of Sun Stone.
- Started working on the replacement, more accurate way for Eevee to evolve into Glaceon and Leafeon.
- Moved the Seagallop Ferry from Cianwood to Olivine (it made no sense to add a new boat house when the one in Olivine wasn't used anymore).
- Fixed NPC text in Olivine that claimed the Ferry was in Cianwood.
- Fixed NPC text that still accidentally hadn't been changed from Gold.

I accidentally got ahead of myself today and skipped a couple of things in Ecruteak when I moved on to Olivine. So I'm gonna go back and fix those now, then get back to work on Olivine. Don't want to accidentally forget things lol.

Anyway, here is the video showing off how you get Leafeon. I know it isn't *exactly* the same as Gen 4, because it isn't leveling up in a specific location. But it's a lot closer than just using a Leaf Stone on him was in 2012.

Might get a warning for gravedigging, but I'm also one the beta testers here to say that Beta Testing has begun!

Currently known bugs:
- Random Flickering ~ This comes as a result of extended tilesets. As of yet, no known fix. Mateo has confirmed that she will continue looking into this and will let us know if a fix can be found.
- Various Capitalization Issues ~ Customized test not being capitalized, things like that. All found issues already fixed.
- Dragon's Den Trainers Not Loading - Flag error, already fixed.

There were a few other small bugs, but nothing else really worth mentioning, a couple of typos and such.

Huge thanks to Mateo and 4thGenGamer! <- Streamed Christmas on his Twitch Channel ♥

No more holiday hacks lol. The halloween hack sucked (since it barely changed anything and I made it in an hour two lol) so I don't even count that as existing haha. As for what's next, I've got Red++, Pokémon Forever, and Pokémon Spirits and Legends (NOT a halloween hack btw) on my list of hacks to make. Oh, and finishing up Kanto's stuff for this one. Lol.

The Book of Unwritten Rules - ROM Hacking Edition

Rule 1 - If Mateo develops it, it will be good.
Rule 2 - If someone else does it, you can do it too.
Rule 3 - The newer the generation, the more it sucks. (Okay, that's not 100% true)

All jokes aside, if you make it I can't complain~ But I would certainly like to see something with a trick or treat event and an original plot, as opposed to the typical "Get your stater, collect 8 badges, beat the Elite 4, view credits" experience.

Because it's a Halloween hack, it will obviously have a focus on Dark/Psychic types but it would be nice to have some focus on Poison once in a while, and poison should fit well enough into a Halloween hack as well.

Maybe add a feature that lets the player choose their outfit. (obviously, this is quite difficult, and not that important, as long as the player sprite is decent for the trainer card and OW. But it would be a wonderful addition!) Maybe a murder mystery event in which the deceased isn't actually dead, but staged the whole thing for entertainment?

Just some random ideas, lemme know what you think~
