Default NDS Mapping Troubles

In my recent attempts to make a custom map for Platinum, I've run across problems and need answers to the following:
1) What's the best way to make a typical tree into its own .obj file? (I can export maps and convert them to .obj already if that helps)
2) How do I ensure that every part of the tree's textures are in that .obj file correctly?
3) Which tutorial on this site is the best overall for NDS mapping? (I only have the free tools + Sketchup 2016 w/ FluidImport; I might get Maya over the Summer)
