Default What if game companies just give it to you?

What if the developers of any major company were to give the development kit to you, regardless of skill, profession, or budget, for the hackers?

Would you think this would ruin the fun of hacking, or make it more accessible?

It would make it easier to add features, but harder for some people. If they gave you the source code out, then the use of custom tools would be eliminated. It also might be more complicated because they'd use different terminology.

I like hacking better, more fun.

At that point, it wouldn't be hacking as much as extending the original kit, IMO.
Although, I wouldn't complain if Nintendo & Sony didn't charge you to develop applications, but took an approach similar to Microsoft and Android in that you can develop for free, but they charge you to host & sell your developed programs. I mean, as a developer, how do I know the Nintendo Wii SDK isn't Hell to work with? And then if I fork over the money to use it, and it is way over my comprehension, I've just wasted a hefty sum of money!

well, the main issue with them, is that they've seen the days where people just make masses of bad games for no effort, whatever.

I guess old habits die hard, it's just their approach on "oh boy let's cut the shovelware and get on with the good stuff", similar to how Microsoft charges you, as you've mentioned.

the thing is, nintendo, sony, etc don't want to just give it away as rivals and developers will be able to easily bootleg games which are not licensed. Yes, I know this can be done with hacking, but still. I always see how far I can go with hacking a game, and I have managed to hack an entire game open and give me everything straight away. Hacking is the only real way to get hold of a development kit because it is basically a base you just mess around with <3

Why get the kit from them when you can simply pirate it like I did?

Working with devkits is really fun, and I know this from personal experience. It makes some of the work much easier, although I don't think everyone would use it.
